An outstanding career in theater, film and TV

Sebastián holds a degree in Theater from the Universidad de Valparaíso with concentration in Dramaturgy. His first play was Colgadas de Peñalolén, inspired by a real event. He produced the documentary Mosaico de pescadores, a play with artisanal fishermen. He is the director and playwright of the company Teatro a la Deriva, whose first play was Brian, el nombre de mi país en llamas; and the second one, Agorafobia, inspired by the tragedy happened at the gay club Divine. Sebastián currently directs El fuego que llevamos dentro, in memory of Nicole Saavedra, a young lesbian murdered in Limache. He produced the play Tirando la pelá, inspired by the experiences of young inmates of a detention center administered by the National Children’s Service (Sename) The play was selected by the Santiago a Mil 2021 International Festival. He also starred in the TV series El Reemplazante, role for which he was nominated for the Altazor Award 2013, and in the film La pasión de Michelangelo, winning the Pedro Sienna Award for Best Male Performance. He is currently the director, screenwriter and star of the feature film La isla de las gaviotas, which addresses the non-binary gender identity of a teenager.

The company

Rescuing the memory of diversities and dissidences

Directed by Valparaíso’s actor and director Sebastián Ayala, this company is a theatrical collective that since 2014 creates plays with original dramaturgy, taking the memory of sexual and gender diversities and dissidences as a central axis, through documentary theater. The company has based its work on a memory research that reveals the historical and/or political reality, generating in the spectator questions about the truths assumed by society regarding gender and sexuality. The collective is composed of cisgender and transgender women, transvestites, non-binary people and gay men, diverse identities that add layers of sensitivity, memory, body and history.

-Because it is a play that deals with a sensitive and complex subject, without losing the care for theatricality and staging. The Teatro a la Deriva company has set out to create a production that is close to the audience and that - despite its audiovisual format - does not lose its theatricality. Most of the artists who are part of the project belong to gender dissidence. The group assumes the case and is committed to taking it to the stage, investigating together with lawyer Silvana del Valle, from the Chilean Network against violence and the movement Justice for Nicole, for over five years.

-Because it is a staging that makes an interesting cross between theater and documentary, originating from the rescue of the memory of Nicole Saavedra Bahamondes, a young lesbian kidnapped, raped and murdered by a bus driver in Limache in 2016, and whose case remained until earlier this year. The play shows the difficulties of her family, to be heard both by institutions and the media. It also shows the deep love and the strong nationwide movement that has been created on behalf of Nicole Saavedra.

—Documentary Theater: Its origins date back to the second half of the twentieth century, when an interest in bringing political and historical issues to the stage emerged, thus blurring the boundaries between fiction and reality. The theatrical aspect is characterized by dealing not only with documents, but also with testimonies that give a more intimate, emotional and personal dimension to the play.

The play is about the murder of Nicole Saavedra and her family's quest for justice.

Nicole Saavedra Bahamondes, a young lesbian from the small village El Melón, is missing. Her family begins a tireless search to find her, but seven days later it is revealed that she has been kidnapped and murdered. For more than five years, her family and friends keep their drive to get justice, but the police and homophobic institutions constantly threaten to prescribe the case. Witnessing this fight, Nicole Saavedra refuses to be erased from history and vows not to abandon her mother until justice is done.

After the premiere, María Bahamondes, Nicole Saavedra’s cousin, expressed her gratitude to the company for their work. "They have been extremely respectful; they have not moved a pencil without consulting me. They have done an excellent job, and with a lot of concern. I want them to continue doing this. I am very grateful because many people did not care about Nicole Saavedra, but they did," she said. Months later, last October 29, the justice system determined life imprisonment for Nicole's murderer.
