Italian master Romeo Castellucci offers a provocative video installation that places spectators under a true dictatorship of words.
What would happen if a giant screen suddenly projected all the nouns that exist in the Spanish language in an unrelenting burst of words, all under the gaze of the person standing in front of it?
Il Terzo Reich, the latest creation by Italian master Romeo Castellucci, is a video installation based on a ghostly representation of every noun; an almost infinite set of letters that together evoke the memory of a concept. Soon, the speed of the words is such that our eyes can barely make each of them out. Our vision is restricted, until we reach a turning point where a fusion occurs, just before we lose control of our understanding. In the blinking that results, we can no longer make out individual words.
Faced with the extremes that this frenzied series of words creates, some of them leave their mark on the spectator’s visual cortex, although the vast majority are lost. Defenseless, people therefore start to consider human words as a matter of quantity. Not what, but how many? This furious load of nouns leaves no room for choice or judgement. The heart of language becomes white noise, leading to chaos.

A holistic creator takes to the stage
Director and set, costume and lighting designer Romeo Castellucci is known worldwide for creating theater based on the arts as a whole, providing a complete vision of the work in question. His theater suggests something that voids the supremacy of literature, turning the stage into a complex form of art, made up of extraordinarily abundant images and expressed through understandable styles such as music, sculpture, painting and architecture. His productions have been put on at some of the world’s most important theaters. He has directed the theater section of the Venice Biennale and been an associated artist at the Festival d’Avignon and a guest director at the Berlin Schaubhüne. This year, he directed Don Giovanni by Mozart in Salzburg and premiered the play Bros in Lugano.
Why go and see Il Terzo Reich?
-Its avant-garde concept presents language as an obligtory kind of communication that has been imposed on us under the pretense of ‘equality’. “In this, a language machine exhausts entire spheres of reality, since the nouns are all the same, mechanically produced as a whole, like prefabricated buildings. It’s a kind of knowledge that leaves no room for escape. Every pause is abolished, engaged. Pauses, or the absence of words, become a battlefield for words and their military-like aggression; nouns from the dictionary, projected on to the screen, are flags planted in a conquered land”.
-It is a good opportunity to find out more about the work of Romeo Castellucci, considered Italy’s most ground-breaking director and whose undeniable artistic style blends theater, the visual arts, music, dance and opera. He will also take part in Santiago a Mil 2022 with his series of videos called Tragedia Endogonidia, available to watch for free on Teatroamil.TV.

—Performance: In this avant-garde artistic style, the play’s medium is the artist’s body and the play itself is the action used to convey this, normally through a combination of multiple elements, such as the visual arts, music, dance and theater. It is one of the artistic styles that transformed art in the mid-twentieth century.
—Video installation: This is a form of video art that uses video as one of its main components, linking video images to other objects and materials in a specific space. In this case, given their size and form, the video images spill beyond the limited frame of a screen and are not conditioned by or related to television as a means of communication.
