A woman sits astride the now-absent horse from Santiago’s Plaza Baquedano, waving flags of struggle whose meanings she no longer fully understands. This is the starting point of Caballo, an absurdist play that turns the country’s most emblematic monument into the stage for a tragicomedy as bewildering as Chile itself.
The protagonist — an elderly, deeply confused woman — embodies the psyche of a nation caught amid the historical and political events of the past seventy years. As the statue collapses around her, she remains on its invisible back, conversing with her soldier daughter, her disappeared detainee husband, God, the devil, and others.
Drifting between dream and reality, Horse asks whether the protagonist’s confusion stems from a dream, a blow to the head during a protest, or a fractured collective memory that compels us to repeat history again and again.
