Before his death, Óscar “Cuervo” Castro — a Chilean playwright exiled in France — left behind a final text: an unpublished autobiography that recounts his theater experiences inside the concentration camps of the Chilean dictatorship.
Fifty years later, his children, Cosme and Oscar, return to Chile with a camera in hand and a play: Théâtrographie. Their father’s testimony traces a map — a journey through the distant city where he was imprisoned, the coastline and the wastelands where barracks and barbed wire once stood. There, among soldiers and watchtowers, “Cuervo” and his companions made theater: comedies and satirical clowning that turned terror into hope.
A journey filled with color, laughter, and joy brings back to life, through paper figures, the ghosts of fantastical characters: the rudderless captain of a wandering island, a “Savior” Christ, and the mayor of a free town. This powerful and unusual piece of family archaeology — crossing theater and documentary — reveals the transformative force of art and poetry in the face of oppression.
