Vaba Lava

Company

Vaba Lava is a unique theater and performing arts center. They create international theater projects involving creatives from Estonia and abroad.

It is a theater that does not have a permanent creative team: for each new play, a new company is formed, which offers work opportunities to mostly independent actors and artists. The peculiarity of our theater is the two-year thematic curatorial programs that are led by guest curators from abroad.

SA (Foundation) Vaba Lava was founded in 2010, in 2014-2022 operated Vaba Lava theater center in Telliskivi Creative City in Tallinn, and since 2018 has a theater house in Narva. In addition to giving performances in several Estonian counties, Vaba Lava is characterized by traveling and giving guest performances outside Estonia.

  • This play contains loud noises, smoke, weapons and swear words.

It debuts at the Festival Teatro a Mil 2025, a utopian play that brings together artists from Latvia, Estonia and Ukraine, inspired by the true story of its playwright, who was forced to flee her country after the war with Russia.

It is a play about the past and the future, about the choice that each of us must make, even if there is no choice. An important aspect of the play is the sincerity and personal experience of the actors. Their performances balance between theatrical acting and documentary testimony. Themes of identity are central, particularly how it is influenced by external forces such as war. The characters struggle with a sense of belonging, both to their country and their personal lives, and question who they are in the face of adversity.

The story focuses on the psychological and emotional trauma caused by the ongoing war in Ukraine, and how people cope with the harsh realities of the conflict and the long-term effects on their mental health. Human choice and how it affects a person's fate, loneliness and internal conflict. The theme of catastrophe, of a small man in the context of big events, is also traced in the play.

The staging is poignant, with a socio-political nature, and reflects current events in Ukraine. Valters Silis' direction focuses on realism and emotional depth using the actors' personal stories. The work is characterized by a combination of documentary style and artistic expression. The use of scale models and cameras creates a multi-layered space where reality and illusion intertwine. The miniature houses serve as a metaphor for the ruined life projected on the screen, enhancing the dramatic impact.
