About Teatro Hoy
What does Chilean theater today deal with? Who are the new artists, playwrights and directors writing the theater of the future? These are some of the questions behind this season of contemporary Chilean theater. Every year since 2011, between April and July, this initiative has been aimed at shining a light on the work of young creators and outstanding examples from the local stage and to encouraging theater footfall beyond the summer season.
The Teatro a Mil Foundation organizes Teatro Hoy with support from the Ministry of Culture, the Arts and Heritage and its main aim is to promote a theater season with shows of the highest quality by companies that have developed a career based on new esthetic approaches, topics and techniques. Its eight versions have brought together the main voices from the local stage, making room both for up-and-coming and established companies.
Among the plays that have been performed during this season, emblematic companies nowadays stand out, such as Sin sangre and El hombre que daba de beber a las mariposas by Teatro Cinema; Cristo and Zoo by Teatro de Chile; La amante fascista by Alejandro Moreno, directed by Víctor Carrasco; Velorio chileno, Castigo and Paso del norte by Cristián Plana; Sobre la cuerda floja by Teatro y su Doble (formerly Teatro Milagros); El año en que nací by Lola Arias; La Reunión by Teatro en el Blanco; Villa+Discurso and Escuela by Guillermo Calderón; La imaginación del futuro and La dictadura de lo cool by La Re-sentida; Tu amarás by Teatro Bonobo and Estado vegetal by Manuela Infante.
Por segundo año consecutivo, Teatro HOY se adapta al formato digital para relevar la escena teatral chilena contemporánea y sus artistas, que, ante todo, siguen creando y explorando nuevos formatos. Este ciclo hace énfasis en la colaboración y curatoría de salas independientes, la descentralización, y al mismo tiempo apuesta por nuevas dramaturgias y el cruce de trayectorias de compañías. Este año la cartelera estará compuesta por 12 creaciones, tres de las cuales corresponden al Programa Territorios Creativos, más un completo programa de talleres y diálogos con el público.
Held between April 4 and July 28, the ninth edition of Teatro Hoy included the plays 2118 Tragedia futurista by La Patogallina; Chaika by Compañía Belova-Iacobelli; Tragicomedia del Ande by Tryo Teatro Banda; Coro by Marabolí + Piriz: Lear, el rey y su doble by Flavia Radrigán and Jesús Urqueta direction; El amarillo sol de tus cabellos largos by La niña horrible; Dragón by Guillermo Calderón; Pedro y el lobo by Teatro y su Doble; and Plata Quemada by Teatrocinema company.
Held between May 31 and August 11, the eighth version of Teatro Hoy included the plays El Golpe, un relato de memoria by Soledad Cruz; Representar by Sebastián Squella; La Conquista by María José Contreras and Trinidad Piriz; Tú amarás by Pablo Manzi and Andreina Olivari; Carnaval by Trinidad González and Democracia by Felipe Hirsch. The 2018 edition was run in conjunction with the GAM Center, Matucana 100, the Universidad Mayor Theater and the Taller Siglo XX Yolanda Hurtado.
The season’s seventh version was held between April 20 and July 9, featuring the plays Ópera by Ana Luz Ormazábal; Surinam by Los Contadores Auditores; La Fábrica by Camila Karl; Croma by David Atencio; El pacto de Renv by Roberto Cayuqueo; Estado Vegetal by Manuela Infante and Beben by Antonia Mendía Oliver. The 2017 edition was run in conjunction with Matucana 100, NAVE, the Teatro del Puente, the Camilo Henríquez Theater and the DUOC UC Theater.
The season’s sixth included eight premieres at venues in the capital between May 6 and July 9. The program tackled relevant issues in the plays Trabajo Social by Tomás Espinosa; Chan! by Camila Le-Bert; La dictadura de lo cool by Marco Layera and La Resentida; Inútiles by Ernesto Orellana; Teorema by David Atencio; Los que vinieron antes by Italo Gallardo and La Laura Palmer; La trampa by Horacio Pérez and Réplica by Acción Residente. The 2016 edition was run in conjunction with the Teatro del Puente, Matucana 100, the Sidarte Theater, the Infante 1415 Center for Creation and Community, the Camilo Henríquez Theater, the GAM Center and the Sala Sergio Aguirre.
Held between April 18 and July 5, the 2015 Teatro Hoy season included the Chilean premieres of No despiertes a los niños by Cristián Plana and Constanza Manríquez; Pájaro by Trinidad González; Novela by Pierre Sauré Costa; El cieno by Nathalia Galgani and Límites by Ítalo Gallardo and La Laura Palmer. ¡Parlamento! by Tryo Teatro Banda completed the program. The fifth edition was run in conjunction with the Taller Siglo XX, the Teatro de la Palabra, the Sidarte Theater, the Teatro del Puente, the GAM Center and Matucana 100.
The season’s fourth version was held between May 29 and June 26 and included the plays El año en que nací by Lola Arias; La Grabación by Álvaro Viguera; Un poco invisible by Hugo Covarrubias and Muriel Miranda; Safari para divorciadas by Los Contadores Auditores; Paso del norte by Cristián Plana and La imaginación del futuro by Marco Layera and La Resentida. The 2014 edition was run in conjunction with the GAM Center, the UC Theater, the Teatro del Puente, the Teatro La Memoria and the San Joaquín Municipal Theater.
The 2013 season was held between March 21 and June 2 and included the premieres of Castigo by Cristián Plana; Zoo by Manuela Infante and the Teatro de Chile and La imaginación del futuro by Marco Layera and La Resentida, as well as new performances of Villa+Discurso by Guillermo Calderón; El año en que nací by Lola Arias; Cerca de Moscú by Paulina García and Escuela by Guillermo Calderón. The third edition was run in conjunction with the Teatro La Memoria, the Estación Mapocho Cultural Center, Matucana 100, the Museum for Memory and Human Rights, the Finis Terrae Theater, the UC Theater and the San Ignacio Alonso Ovalle School.
Held between March 17 and July 15, the second version included the plays Cristo by Manuela Infante and the Teatro de Chile; Sobre la cuerda floja by Paola Giannini and Aline Kuppenheim; El año en que nací by Lola Arias; Velorio Chileno by Cristián Plana and La reunión by Trinidad González. More than a hundred performances were held at five of the capital’s venues: the Mori Bellavista Theater, the Estación Mapocho Cultural Center, the GAM Center, the Teatro del Puente and the Universidad Mayor Theater.
The first version was held between March 23 and April 17 and included the plays Sin sangre and El hombre que daba de beber a las mariposas, both by Teatrocinema; Villa+Discurso by Guillermo Calderón; La amante fascista by Víctor Carrasco; Loros Negros by Manuela Infante; Berlín no es tuyo by Juan Pablo Peragallo and El amor es un francotirador by Néstor Cantillana. The plays were performed at Matucana 100, the Museum for Memory and Human Rights, the Teatro de la Palabra and the UC Theater.
