Staged by Peter Brook and Marie-Hélène Estienne -an emblematic duo of European theater- and performed by a Chilean cast, this production plunges into the essence of Shakespeare's The Tempest.
Peter Brook and Marie-Hélène Estienne's version of The Tempest, William Shakespeare's last play, strips away some scenes and secondary characters, leaving it only to its essence: the focus lies on yearning for freedom, as it is the key concept longed for by its protagonists. As is always the case with Shakespeare, the word comes to our ears as a suggestion, from where it keeps echoing.
On the island where they are confined, Caliban, the slave, is longing for freedom. Ariel, the spirit, also seeks freedom, but in a different sense. Also, Duke Prospero must free himself from the self-inflicted task of revenge, which prevents him from being free. The duke, immersed in his books in search of the hidden, had kept himself in his dreams, only to be betrayed by his brother. Upon his arrival as an exile on the island, one would think that he finally would find freedom, since he possesses the art of magic and can transform the elements at will.
The French premiere with the cast of Theâtre des Bouffes du Nord was the result of a laboratory carried out in 2020. The Spanish version to be performed in Chile counts on an outstanding national cast and will be directed from France, by the legendary creative duo Peter Brook and Marie-Hélène Estienne. A co-production between Fundación Teatro a Mil and Teatro Nacional Chileno, with Amalá Saint-Pierre as the assistant director.

Born in London in 1925, he is considered one of the most influential contemporary theater directors of the 20th century. Over the course of his career, he has developed plays in genres such as theater, opera, film and essay. His first staging of The Tempest premiered in 1968 and was brought back in 1990 with Tempest Project, a new version of the Shakespearean classic. In the 1970s, Peter Brook moved to France and founded the Centre International de Créations Théâtrales. He is also a co-founder of the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord. He has won two Tony Awards, two Laurence Olivier Theatre Awards, and the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts.
Marie-Hélène, a French dramaturge and screenwriter, joined the Centre International de Créations Théâtrales in 1977 and went on to work directly with Peter Brook, thus initiating a collaboration that would mark the trajectory of the duo, considered to be a reference for the European theater. She is the author of Tierno Bokar and Once and Twelve and has adapted and directed plays by various exponents of the world of theatre such as William Shakespeare, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Samuel Beckett, among others. She is also well remembered for her adaptation of the Hindu myth The Mahabharata.
This English dramaturge and poet (1564-1616) is an undisputed classic of universal literature and theater; a master at portraying feelings of his characters, such as pain, betrayal, love and jealousy. His plays -Hamlet, King Lear, Othello, Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream, among others- are still in full force, being read and staged all over the world.
