Mister Shakespeare is an intimate, fragmented monologue that reflects on creative burnout.
Set inside a pool hall, we’re never quite sure whether the person speaking—an actor, a psychiatrist, or a playwright who claims to be William Shakespeare—is questioning the relevance of art or the emotional exhaustion that creation demands.
As this worn-out figure plays vinyl records on a turntable, he shares the contradictions of his artistic journey: the absurdity of becoming a celebrated artist, and the curse of being trapped in the eternity of his own work. His body deteriorates, cancer eats away at him, yet death never comes.
The piece leans on the presence of an older performer who blends historical, philosophical, and personal references with a tone that shifts between irony and melancholy. In doing so, this dying, multifaceted, contradictory character becomes a symbol of the search for meaning through art, memory, and language.
It’s unmistakably a work with autobiographical tones, where the voices of Marco Antonio de la Parra and his greatest intellectual influences—among them William Shakespeare—intertwine.
