At the crossroads of art, science and new technologies

Javier is a researcher, sound artist and Associate Professor at the Sound Department of the Arts Faculty in the Universidad de Chile, interested in working at the crossroads between the arts, science and new technologies. His research is focused on characterizing physiological responses of performers and audiences to music, in order to design and generate new and meaningful forms of musical interaction. Therefore, his artistic work is related to the design of interactive sound systems in diverse environments, be it sound installations, musical performances, dance or cinema. At the Universidad de Chile, Jaimovich leads interdisciplinary research and artistic creation projects, and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Sound Engineering and Media Arts.

An interest in contemporary dance techniques

Francisca is a creator, performer and academic at the Dance Department of the Universidad de Chile, where she teaches undergraduate courses. She holds a M.A. in Dance from the American University (2001) and is a Laban Movement Analyst (CMA) at the Laban-Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies (LIMS) (2013). She started professionally as a contemporary dance performer in 1990, in independent companies in Santiago de Chile. Her areas of pedagogical interest initially were contemporary techniques and contact improvisation, and later somatic systems applied to the training of dance artists – a research that she has deepened in her postgraduate studies and specialized in movement analysis. She initiated herself in the field of choreographic creation in 2001, carrying out artistic residencies at the American University and the George Washington University in the United States, and mainly in collaboration with Eduardo Osorio (MorandOsorio), Camilo Rossel (Melancolía Investigación Escénica) and Javier Jaimovich (Emovere).

-Because it is an "instalaformance", as Francisca Morand called it in an interview with El Desconcierto. It not only exhibits a dance piece to the public but also invites them to interact with an installation that allows them to be a living part of the work, in a personalized way, so that each person who goes through the experience can reflect upon their own body.

-Because it deals with current issues, such as the relationship between the body and technology, since we are confronted daily with machines that require our interaction to function. In addition, the piece touches on issues such as the unstable, dynamic, and decentered nature of technologized environments, where the relationships and networks of connection between the artificial and the organic generate complex meanings and question what we understand as humans and living.

Performance: avant-garde artistic expression in which the medium is the artist's body and the play itself is the action performed by the artist. In general, it combines multiple elements, such as plastic arts, music, dance and theatre. It is one of the artistic expressions that transformed art in the mid-20th century.

Intersecciones frágiles

  • Two performances of 15 to 18 minutes each, with an intermission of 10 minutes. It is recommended that attendees arrive 10 minutes before the beginning to interact with the installation.

In times of hyper-connected relationships, Francisca Morand and Javier Jaimovich offer a reflection on the body and its interaction with technology.

In Fragile Intersections, performance and installation merge into a single work, reflecting on the contemporary body that emerges from the intersection and interaction of biology and technology; a new hybrid body traversed by information that questions its subjectivity, its identity and its simultaneous state between the organic and the artifical. Voice, sound, movement, dance, biosignals and objects converge in fragile intersections, all of them fused in an interactive system that proposes a complex body: sometimes singular and sometimes collective, part flesh and part machine, immersed in an unstable environment that forces the subject to feel, act and transform.

The interactive installation Fragile Intersections will be on display at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo del Parque Forestal from January 4th to 22nd. The installation is accessible for the public during the museum's opening hours. The performance will take place on the following days and times: Friday 14th at 3 pm , Saturday 15th at 12:30 pm, Thursday 20th , Friday 21th and Saturday 22nd at 12:30 pm and 3 pm. The performance has limited capacity (20 people), so attendance will be only with mobility pass and registration at interseccionesfragiles@gmail.com. It is recommended to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the performance, in order to interact with the installation. Both activities are completely free of charge. -Porque es una “instalaformance”, como la llamó Francisca Morand en entrevista a El Desconcierto que no solo expone ante el público una pieza de danza, sino que también los invita a interactuar con una instalación que les permite ser parte viva de la obra, de manera personalizada, de manera que cada persona que pasa por la experiencia puede generar una reflexión desde su propio cuerpo.

-Porque toca temas muy contingentes, como la relación entre el cuerpo y la tecnología, ya que cada día nos enfrentamos con mayor frecuencia a interacción con máquinas que requieren de nuestra interacción para funcionar. Además, la pieza toca temas como lo inestable, lo dinámico y descentrado de los ambientes tecnologizados, donde las relaciones y las redes de conexión entre lo artificial y lo orgánico genera sentidos complejos y pone en cuestión lo que entendemos por humano y lo vivo.

Performance: Expresión artística de carácter vanguardista en la que el medio de la obra es el cuerpo del artista y la obra en sí es la acción que este realiza, combinando, en general, múltiples elementos, como las artes plásticas, la música, la danza y el teatro. Es una de las expresiones artísticas que transformaron el arte a mediados del siglo XX.
