Teatro La María

The company

An unmistakable language

Teatro La María was founded by Alexandra von Hummel and Alexis Moreno in 2000. It is one of the most relevant companies of contemporary Chilean theater. Plays such as Las huachas, Los millonarios, Fe de ratas and El hotel, among others, have been performed in America, Europe and Asia. The company has developed a particular scenic language, where the visuals, acting proposal and dramaturgy - combining texts of their own authorship with rewritings of classic texts - have led them to become a reference for new creators.

-Because Teatro La María is one of the most interesting Chilean theater companies of the 2000s, with plays that seek to portray current social issues, idiosyncrasy and politics in formats that mix dark comedy and satire. It’s their way of pointing out many issues that today hurt us as a country.

-Because the story - that of a swindler who seduces a family to follow his message of moral superiority in order to rob them of their property - brings to the table issues that were as valid in the 17th century as they are today: ambition without limits, the lust for power and the human specie’s need to compare themselves to others, putting themselves on a moral high ground.

Molière: Born in 1622 in Paris as Jean-Baptiste Popelin, Moliѐre is considered the father of French comedy. He began his career writing for the Béjart theater company, and soon became known for his highly satirical texts, which earned him a ban in the city for being considered an insult to French society, which he defined as corrupt. After several years of censorship, in 1669 he obtained the authorization of Louis XIV to premiere his plays. Among his best-known plays are Don Juan, The Miser, The Misanthrope, The Gentleman, Tartuffe, The Doctor in Spite of Himself and The Imaginary Invalid. A few days after the premiere of the latter, he died unexpectedly, in 1673.

El hotel: This play by Teatro La María, premiered in 2016, is a comedy inspired by several characters from Chile's recent political history. In this play, a group of old men convicted of crimes against humanity live in a sort of elderly hotel-asylum. There they are cared for by a couple of male nurse-servants, whom they constantly humiliate. Meanwhile, they live on the memories of a Chile under dictatorship and then in transition to democracy, human rights violations and 80’s TV programs with flashy vedettes.

Tartufo

By Molière | Directed by Alexandra von Hummel | The Teatro La María Company | Adaptation: Víctor Carrasco | Audiovisual Direction: Vicente Sabatini

  • Chile
  • Spanish
  • 71 minutes

Through its unmistakable language, Teatro La María revives one of Molière's iconic characters.

A "quiltro" production. This is how Alexandra von Hummel, its director, defines this staging which revives an iconic character of the creative imaginary of the French playwright Molière: Tartuffe, a false champion of moral integrity seeks to steal the fortune of a wealthy man. He is trying to seduce a Chilean family given to excess, bling bling, lust and suspicious wealth, with the promise to grant them power.

This time, the unmistakable language of the Teatro La María company fills the stage with characters in baroque wigs and grotesque makeup. They take over a theater hall, spilling out of their seats and ordering food for delivery. The play shows a non-realistic world that exposes its artifices to portray a story which today - in the midst of the current Chilean context- -, is heard, felt and perceived more real than ever.

Tartufo is part of the cycle Ni tan clásicos, a Teatro a Mil production especially designed for audiovisual format.
